The Daily Dose ofGood

A lot of the old scares turned out fine. The endings just took too long to make the news.

The Daily Dose of Good is a letter that comes every morning at 8. Five good things that really happened, and the last one is always an old scare, told all the way to the end.

2025
1987

At the end of 2025, 392 of them were flying free.

In 1987 there were 27 California condors left in the world. Every one of them was living in a zoo.

2023
1985

The whole world stopped using the sprays and fridge gases that caused it. In 2023 the UN said it's on track to heal over most of the planet by about 2040.

Every country agreed to stop, and then they actually did. I still can't get over that.

In 1985, scientists found a hole in the ozone over the South Pole. That's the thin layer up high that keeps the sun from burning us. For years it kept growing.

2019
1969

Cleveland spent fifty years cleaning it up. In 2019 the state said the fish in it were fine to eat again.

Picture somebody fishing off a bridge over a river that used to burn. That's the picture I keep.

In 1969 the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland was so dirty that it caught fire.

2016
1970

The hunting stopped and the whales came back. In 2016, most of the world's humpbacks came off the endangered list.

If you've ever watched one jump on a whale watch, you saw how that story ends.

In 1970 the humpbacks went on the endangered list, after years of hunting. “Save the whales” was on bumper stickers all over America.

One of these comes last, every single morning.

50years

The good part of a story like that takes years to happen.

A river doesn't get clean in a week. It takes fifty years of ordinary work, and no single morning of it looks like news. So the ending slips by, and the scare is the version most of us remember.

I spent twenty years on an overnight news desk, reading what came in while the country slept. In my second year I started saving the good ones in a folder. Every morning at 8, I open it for you.

8:00
where you are

It comes at 8 in the morning, every single day.

Five good things that really happened, each one with a real person in it, written the way you'd tell a friend. The last one is always an old scare and how it came out.

After that, one small thing to try that night, with real research behind it. Nothing to buy and no app. One a day, and that's plenty.

At the bottom there's one story picked out for you to send on to someone.

From the good side of the news.

Let me save you one for tomorrow morning.

Take one every morning.

You're in for tomorrow at 8.
